Florence Biennale USA 2009

The initiative and energy to form group meetings and even shows with fellow attendees to this year's Florence Biennale is commendable and even necessary . The American artists who have been involved with the International Art shows and especially the Florence have done so as unrecognized ambassadors of our American cultures.

We have been slow to organize over the years but this year 2009 the US artists do have resort and resource. The FBUSA web site is designed to showcase the activities and events you decide to create. I would like to recommend you all to unite as one group as much possible, local gatherings, short exhibits and local press releases would create a collage of collective projects and activities that are showcased on the FBUSA site.

Transporting

Much of the headache of sending art work for international shows abroad can be avoided if one
chooses the right shows. The Florence Biennale is solely artist represented and as such artists do not have the demands of others for the exhibit. The Biennale committee understands the heavy costs for many and although they have tried to organize a process of shipment and storage , these costs are tremendously difficult for artists. Many people carry their work rolled and restretch . This requires some planning,I had my
stretchers custom made in Florence last time and then gave the remaining ones back to the shop for a discount. I love meeting new people so this was a fun way to save money too. The dimensions of work should also be considered ...a tryptic image say.. 6ft by 7ft can by rolled in to a tube under 30'' and 10'' wide. and can be carried as hand luggage too. Velcro and composite frames like tent poles can stretch out a canvas quite well or even a simple tapestry hanging system works. Of course the fully framed art work looks best but even these can be found cheaply if one researches the standard sizes used locally. I think that the more I find solutions the more beneficial contacts and interesting encounters I experience. However taking work to Dubai and restricted venues leaves you little choice but to pay the 'piper' and hope you make friends with someone inside for the next time.
If you've sold things on ebay and you've set up a Paypal account you already have an international banking system of your own ! I have paid for framing and storage and accepted commissions through Paypal. It's possible to shave in currencies that are doing better than our own . They even have credit /debit cards that are good all over europe.
